The basics of the keto diet is that you are supposed to eat a high amount of fat, an average amount of protein and a very low amount of carbohydrates in your food. By doing so you will change the body to stop using carbohydrates as the main fuel and instead use fat in the body. Normally carbohydrates in your food are changed into glucose that is the used to e.g. fuel your brain when you are thinking. However with a very low intake of carbohydrates the body is forced to change the energy source to fat instead. This process is called ketosis and that you are in a state of ketosis. When this happens the liver will convert the fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies are the transported to your vital organs such as the brain and used as energy instead of glucose.
You might wonder about the history of the keto diet and how it all got started. The keto diet was first introduced in 1920 as it was developed for treatment of epilepsy. The keto diet was used quite frequently for over a century as treatment for epilepsy and it was quite efficient.
In 1990 the Charlie Foundation was founded by Jim Abrahams who had a son with epilepsy. Abrahams son greatly benefited from the use of the changed diet and his seizures was controlled and greatly reduced. To further promote the keto diet there was also a movie created in 1997 called First Do No Harm. The Charlie Foundation also created several research studies that showed the benefits with the keto diet and this started others scientists to also start researching the keto diet and the benefits with it.
In recent time the keto diet is mainly used to help people improve their general health and to loose weight. There is also research showing that people with diabetes will have benefits with eating according to a diet that is low on carbohydrates and high on fat (an example is fat bombs).
